Byron Screen

It is not often that a large folding screen is presented for conservation. This example, reputedly built by Lord Byron himself, is on display at Newstead Abbey, his ancestral home. The screen was in a sorry condition – a catalogue of old damages, punctures, failing repairs and disfiguring varnish and overpaint.

We surface cleaned the screen, opened three panels to allow us to insert stable infills and to repair and patch old punctures. Old retouchings and in some areas discoloured varnish were removed before applying an isolating varnish layer and retouching before a final unifying varnish was applied.

Our treatment was described to fellow professionals at meetings in London, Edinburgh and Aberystwyth.
